I have just now listened to this album having received it as a gift. Boyle has an amazing voice. She's a beast of a singer. But these impressions come more from her live appearances than from this disk. The disk demonstrates how clear and - at times - powerful her voice is, but the songs became a bit of a blur to me because they all seemed to have the same pace. I heard this in the car all by myself and driving route 81 south it was a bit soporific.
"Wild Horses," is terrific, but I prefer the live version from AGT by a wide margin. The AGT version is sung in a lower key. I think this key demonstrates the power in her voice better and also makes her voice more distinctive. I think these songs are sung in fairly high keys because, as the first CD out of the gate, there was an effort to make her sound younger. And she does sound young. So, they succeeded in that. I guess I'm a bit out of step with the parade on this point.
I'm no expert on voice and listening to voice professionals discuss Boyle is like listening to actors discuss Spencer Tracy's acting or baseball pitchers discuss pitching. As a non-actor and non-pitcher, I can understand only so much. But it's clear from what voice professionals and many singers say, that Boyle has 'it'. This album seems to have reinforced and advanced their impressions.
It's great to own it, though and I'll be very interested to see what's on CD #2. Get more detail about I Dreamed A Dream.
