Wow, i got this for a Christmas present (bought on Amazon)and knew I would love it based on previews, but was blown away when I actually took the time to listen to each one of the tracks. Each is great in its own way. I kept thinking Josh Grobban for some reason: I think because I see him, and now Susan, on this higher spiritual plane with voices that resonate something that must truly be from somewhere else... Seriously, she brings out something special in every song she sings, subtle nuances,sometimes just in the way she enunciates a single word, such as the way she says "girl" in "Who I was born to be".(very subtle) She surprised me with how soulful she is in all of the songs, and frankly the dimensions she brings to the songs.. I dont know, i guess I thought she would only do really great job on a certain genre of songs. I will not labor the rags to riches story of Susan Boyle here as it is well known. Suffice to say the first album released by her is pretty impressive, (and I'm no aficionado of popular music, being more classically oriented). Who would have thought you could take music by the Rolling Stones, Monkees, and Madonna, and make it sound new! Plaudits there to her producer Steve Mac, despite whining by self proclaimed music experts giving music reviews on Amazon.
It is indeed unfortunate that the CD released to the western hemisphere did not include the beautiful "Wings to Fly" track included in the CD sold in Japan, however I am sure that will be rectified when a second album comes out.
Some reviewers have noted that they like Ms Boyle's voice but were unhappy with the choice of song. I cannot understand why? Some of these songs clearly have a personal meaning to Ms Boyle and, being cognizant of her difficult upbringing, are a way for her to hammer a final nail into the coffin of those who were unkind, and her current detractors.
The songs chosen are beautifully sung. Ms. Boyle is still learning her trade and has gone from proverbially singing in a choir in church each Sunday to being instantly recognized wherever she goes. Are there many of us who could handle such pressure? To all those reviewers out there who are carping at miniscule issues, my advice would be to sit back, relax, and let what is an undoubtedly astounding talent mature. Wow, what a disappointment.

Anyone who heard Susan Boyle on "Britain's Got Talent" when she shocked the world and caused many a tear to fall with her incredible voice was undoubtedly looking forward to her debut CD. Sad to say, and through no fault of her own, there wasn't much to look forward to in the end.

This CD would be better suited as music to snooze with, not revel at. On songs like "Cry Me a River" and "How Great Thou Art" when you would expect to be shaken out of your shoes with some rafter-reaching vocals, Boyle barely extends her diaphragm above a whisper. With "You'll See", a Madonna tune, Boyle didn't bring anything new to her rendition. It's a pretty cover but a boring one, which appears to be the theme of this album. A voice worthy of long-standing Broadway showtunes was subjected to the sort of treatment that a manufactured pop star would receive.

"Who I Was Born to Be" is a nice tune, probably the best on the album, although her consistent vibrato here, (as well as on the rest of the album), is so overdone that you can't appreciate it. Other classics such as "The End of the World" and "Daydream Believer" are not done any justice by what could have been some of the best cover versions performed. Plus, they chose to end the album with "Silent Night". A Christmas track? Really? How random. That's fine for this time of year but are you really going to want to listen to that in June? At least they made it the last track for easier skipping. And something seems really wrong with a priviledged white woman singing "Amazing Grace", especially when she's not singing it with gusto. The beauty of this song is to express an appreciation of relief from a long-standing suffering. It's supposed to be sung with passion and fire and again, we get barely more than a whisper.

Unless you have been living in a cave, you're probably already well aware of the remarkable fairy tale story of Susan Boyle - of the frumpy-looking Scottish woman who wowed the crowds (and Simon) with her impeccable and soul-stirring rendition of "I Dreamed a Dream"

At the center of this fairy tale is Susan's beautiful voice - which is showcased in this excellent CD. I've listened to it 2-3 times already, and I have been moved each time I've heard it. Not only does Susan have a crystalline voice but her diction is impeccable, her intonation and inflection flawless, and her ability to emote superb.

Susan especially shines on songs such as "Wild Horses," "I Was Born To Be," "Amazing Grace," and her signature tune, "I Dreamed a Dream." What I really appreciated was the diverse mix of musical styles, including the Martin Luther King Jr. tribute, "Up To The Mountain." Even though she is slightly out of her element with "Daydream Believer" and "End of the World," she still does an excellent rendering of both covers.

The linear notes in the CD are also very good, with Susan giving a brief explanation after each song why she chose it and why it had particular meaning to her.

The only disappointing part of the whole album was her take on "How Great Thou Art." Even though she does a beautiful job on the chorus (which she repeats 3 times), I would have loved to hear her sing the verses as well!

Otherwise, like the Ugly Duckling who became the beautiful swan, and like Cinderella at the ball, Susan's "Happily Ever After" is culminated in this CD, and one I would highly recommend.

What a bad luck for her not to have good looks (such as Sarah Brightman for example) because I'm sure that this is the aspect of her that delayed her acceptance. I wanted to love the CD as much as I loved watching Susan Boyle's audition clip on You Tube. But I just couldn't get into it. I listened to it in the car, at home, at work; I was trying to convince myself that I liked Boyle. And then I realized, what I loved most--was her story.

When I played the CD's version of her signature song, "I Dreamed a Dream," I wasn't moved in the same way. It sounded very polished. I preferred the original, raw and powerful performance that brought an audience of haters to its feet, cheering for Boyle. I wanted to relive the moment when an extraordinarily plain Jane gal raised eyebrows and shut up all those who laughed out loud and thought:

"Who does this middle-aged loser think she is? What talent could this lady possibly have with those looks and that body and those clothes?" I could relate to Boyle. I think a lot of people could relate to being pre-judged based on their appearance.

Why you may like this CD:

* Boyle does have talent. She sings clearly and the music doesn't overpower her voice; she is the star.

* There is an eclectic mix of music--from the traditional "Amazing Grace" and "Silent Night" to Madonna's "You'll See" and "Wild Horses" by the Rolling Stones. Although, to me, the songs started to blend together.

* Her rendition of The Monkees' "Daydream Believer" isn't peppy pop; it's wistful, which made me take notice of a song I never cared for before.

* She has jotted down personal comments about her songs in the liner notes. For "Who I Was Born To Be," she wrote (with two "buts"), "Ambition, fate, call it what you will, but but who was I born to be? Mum must have picked this for me."

* There's a lovely picture of Boyle and her mum, although this Susan looks quite different from the one featured on the back of the CD, sitting next to a piano in a dark, ruffled gown.

So, in the end, why 3 stars? I asked myself, "Would I buy this again?" and the answer was no. I'm happier with the You Tube clip.

I have been intrigued by Susan Boyle since seeing her first appearance on "Britain Got's Talent." Like so many millions watching her preformance on YouTube, I was thrilled when she "turned the tables" on both the audience and the judges who, obviously, were judging her by her appearance, age, etc. before ever hearing or seeing her talent! I have never seen an artist "turn the tide" for herself so quickly causing her viewers and judges to feel ashamed for having judged by appearance only or having judged too quickly!

I think that they didn't put the production into the music or production because they KNEW that she would sell huge amounts anyway, so why waste the money. Eagle eye Cowell was checking out the bottom line - and probably a mansion as well next to Paula Abdul's townehouse.

I was cursed hearing this c.d., and long for my departed money so foolishly spent. I am now being exorcised by massive hearings of great singers - Streisand, Celine, Peggy Lee, Sarah Brightman, etc. etc. In fact, it's ABB (anyone but Boyle). Say a prayer for me, light a candle for me. Perhaps the horror will recede.

O.K. I could tell you about every song and try to find value here. And some people try to salvage their experience by mentioning one or two songs that Boyle did "well". But, let's be honest here. There is no song that's great, or even near good. The only reason she got this far was because of public sympathy. Can she sing? Yes. Can I sing? Yes. In fact, we can all sing. Should we get our own c.d. too? Probably not. The world is not fair, plus it has no discernment when it comes to quality.

I am donating this c.d. to a petty thief who is in prison. Perhaps he can mold it to some useful instrument to pick the prison cell door and escape. I am doing this to PROVE to the detractors that it has some destination other than the trash.
